How can I shoot better video?
There are several factors to keep in mind to help you shoot better video.
Lighting is a key factor on location. You can almost never have enough. Watch the sun if outside, only place the sun behind your subject if you want the silhouetted look.
Children are obviously smaller but it is still important to be at eye level as much as possible when videoing. So, get down on your knees and just don't show the tops of their heads.
Limit Zooming when video taping and never use the digital zoom. Shoot more than the event shoot some of the surroundings. B-roll is supplemental footage, the extra stuff you shoot to fill in gaps, transition a scene, hide a zoom, or illustrate something that's being described in A-roll. When the time comes to edit, you can sprinkle these shots throughout the movie, thereby adding visual diversity and making it much more interesting to watch.
